Who We Are:
On October 22, 2013, All Star Metals, LLC (ASM), a subsidiary of Scrap Metal Services, LLC (SMS), was awarded a contract from the United States Navy to dismantle and recycle the USS Forrestal (ATV 59). As recycling industry leaders, SMS and ASM have the track record and talent to responsibly and efficiently complete this project.
SMS, a privately-held company headquartered in Burnham, IL, operates scrap processing, steel mill services, and ship, barge, oil rig, transportation equipment dismantling and recycling facilities throughout the United States and in Mexico.
SMS provides full-service scrap management, consulting and purchasing services to industrial scrap generators, demolition contractors, maritime contractors, and transportation and equipment leasing companies, on a local and national basis.
Our founders bring over a half-century of experience in the scrap business and today our growing network now includes 14 processing facilities in Illinois, Indiana, Alabama, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas, as well as Mexico and we currently employ a total workforce of over 550 employees in the U.S.
ASM, acquired by SMS in 2012, is a world class ship recycling, metal processing, and environmental remediation contractor operating in Brownsville, TX.
Founded in 2003, ASM is one of the largest ship recyclers in North America, providing services to the United States’ government, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) and commercial barge and vessel owners.
With experience processing hundreds of marine structures, including vessels, barges, troop carrier ships, and aircraft carriers, our expert crew is skilled at dismantling marine vessels safely and efficiently.

As President of ASM, Nikhil Shah is responsible for overseeing the dismantling of the USS Forrestal. Mr. Shah has more than 20 years’ experience in the scrap industry and is a certified Compliance, Safety and Health Officer (CSHO) specializing in recycling & remediation of asbestos, lead, PCBs and other hazardous material.
